Reading

At Walkergate Community School we believe learning to read is one of the most important skills our pupils develop during their time at our school. We aim to foster a shared love of language, reading and books, teach children comprehension, speaking and listening skills, and support them whilst learning a wide range of new vocabulary. We strongly value parental support with pupils learning to read at home.

As the majority of our children are now completing remote learning from home, we have put together a guide to home reading using the website Oxford Owl that is in line with the home school reading guidance that we would usually follow.

Within Early Years and Key Stage 1 we use a structured phonics approach to teaching children to read. The scheme we use is called ‘Read Write Inc’. This begins in Nursery summer term and then continues usually until the end of Year 2. In Key Stage 2, years 3 to 6 follow the Oxford Reading Tree scheme to develop pupil’s comprehension skills and through a range of quality texts which are engaging for the children. In all of our teaching we aim to foster and nurture the feeling of success as a reader and to develop a love of reading and books.

Expectations for home reading:

  •          Pre-Nursery and Nursery – Read at least 3 stories per week to your child.
  •          Reception – Children to read two times per week
  •          Year 1 - Children to read three times per week
  •          Year 2-6 - Children to read five times per week

We would always encourage you to find time to read a story to your child as much as you possibly can, whether that be during the day or just before bed time. Remember to ask your child questions about the book they are reading using our VIPERS Questions Guide which you can find in this section for you to use. We have also uploaded the instructions for how to access Oxford Owl at home.

If you have any questions about how to develop your children reading skills at home further please speak with your child’s teacher to find out more.
