Phonics - Read Write Inc
At Walkergate we strive for children to gain a secure foundation of phonics throughout Early years and Key Stage 1. We want this phonological knowledge to be embedded at an early start so that our pupils are well equipped for the next stage of their learning. We recognise the importance of a clearly planned and structured early reading curriculum and aim for children to have the skills to decode words in order to be able to read fluently with understanding of what they have read. We promote and encourage a love of literature and an enjoyment of reading for pleasure, both at school and home.
Phonics At School
As a school we use Read Write Inc (RWI) to deliver our phonics into reading curriculum. At Walkergate the foundations of phonics are introduced in Nursery. Children have a daily circle time with a Communication, Language and Literacy focus, linked to Development Matters, and develop early phonological awareness. In Reception, Phonics is taught through daily phonic teaching in large groups and children consolidate phonological awareness in small group activities and continuous provision. As children progress into Year 1 the daily teaching of Phonics is organised into large groups based upon children’s phonic knowledge and as children develop their knowledge and understanding of phonics alternative pronunciations and spellings are taught. Children are taught the Year 1 common exception word spellings throughout the year to support fluency in early reading. In Year 2, based upon children’s phonic knowledge, children transition to the RWI spelling programme through daily lessons teaching the year 2 spelling rules.
Phonics At Home
We want to support families to help develop their child’s phonics knowledge and early reading skills at home. Do support you to do this I have uploaded specific videos below that will help you to understand some of the principles of the Read Write Inc programme to support your child such as how to pronounce letters and sounds. Your class teacher will provide bespoke phonics activities for your child, but further support for you can be found below.
